Your Christmas 06 Loot
Well guys, thats another Christmas gone. I had a great time with my family in Auckland, and also picked up a few cool new toys. Here’s an overview of a few of the tech items I received over the holiday period.

Canon 75-300mm Telephoto Lens
I’ve been wanting a telephoto zoom lens for quite a while now, and yesterday I got one. The lens I received was the Canon EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III. In more simple terms, it will get me really really close to sporting action.
I cant wait to test out this lens in the upcoming domestic cricket season.
2GB Compact Flash Card
I’ve been shooting with my Canon 350D for the past 2 months using two 128MB CF cards. Yes, I can see you cringing through the screen, it was very difficult having two cards which only held 24 RAW photos in total.
WIth this new card I can hold over 500 JPEG images, or over 225 RAW images. Great for a full days shooting with the telephoto lens at sporting events.
Manfrotto Monopod
This is just like a tripod, except it’s like one tall walking stick. It will be paired and used in conjunction with my new telephoto lens when shooting sports.
It should help me keep my shots steady and sharp. I used it a little yesterday afternoon while shooting some birds, and the results were very satisfying.
As you can see, photography gear was a hit on this years list. (I also picked up a few things like a new bike, Nike+iPod armband, and cash..) There are still a few items I still want to purchase (but my birthday is coming very soon, on Feb 9th). Further down the line, I want to upgrade my computing setup, so the saving starts today.
What did you pick up for Christmas?

This year I decided for no Mac — so I got a Nintendo Wii, an iPod shuffle, and a PS3 gift certificate. Now I’m just wondering when I’ll be able to use that last one.

BradI got a bunch of money, and that’s pretty much all. (Not that I’m complaing…) So Glenn, just to warn you that lens is ok, but it gets REALLY soft at long focal legnths. It’s a good lens, it just gets a bit soft after about 200.

Heya! Merry Christmas to everyone, I hope everyone enjoyed.
I got just a couple of things, mainly a Wii with three games, new chair for my room, £1500 and some random things for my room, clothes and all that stuff.
Come MacWorld (waiting purely so I don’t miss too much out) I’m going to pick myself up either a MacBook or an iMac 24″.
Again, hope you all enjoyed!

My family knows me too well (or thinks they do) to just give me cash. I did score a Nintendo DS lite, an iDog (those things are cooler than they look), a new hard drive, and a USB 2.0 PCI card for my rather old Power Mac G4.

(Sorry for the somewhat late reply)
I’m loving it actually. The screen is HUGE. If I didn’t know it was a 20″ model I would have guessed instinctly that it was the 24″. I wasn’t expecting it to be this big.
I’ve got one gripe though, I don’t know if it’s just me or if it’s even a bug, but when I put it to sleep and woke it up sort of shortly after, the fan got louder. It starts up like rrRRRrrrr…, then gets quieter. It’s still very silent, but it kind of bugs me that it messed up not even a day after I got it.
All in all it’s a great machine. I installed Vista on it (Que screaming from every Apple user, and then silence), and it runs great. First time being able to use Aero. I did a sort of stress test and dragged the very-glassy “Add Widget” window all over the place and the CPU usage only went up to 54%. :D
All in all I’d say it’s worth the $1500.

Also, I don’t know if you noticed but your header is messed up in Safari. I think it’s because the background is a PNG (Which get darkened in Safari for some reason) and the header image is a JPG. If you convert the header to PNG or vice versa it should look fine.
