yFlicks: It’s iPhoto For Video

23712.pngDo you have a large collection of movies, TV shows, YouTube clips, and various Apple commercials on your Mac like me? If you do, you will know the awful feeling when you venture to your movie folder and you have files scattered all around the place - even if they are in a tidy folder setup, it can still be difficult to find exactly what you are looking for.

Introducing yFlicks, iPhoto for video content. yFlicks is a movie player based on the QuickTime Framework. It does much more than play videos though, you can use yFlicks to index all of the movies on your HDD, and easily browse them via thumbnails and folders. You can even rate your videos to help single out your favorites.

You can easily download YouTube/Google videos and export them to other movie formats, giving your the potential to put videos on portable devices such as the iPod, and the PSP. This will keep iPod owners happy, allowing them to get content from YouTube to their portable players quickly and easily.

This is by far the best video management application I have seen to date, the UI is beautiful, the concept is gold, and it can only get better from here.

yFlicks is available from ManyTricks Software for $20 USD, there is a free trial which allows you to launch the application 10 times without having to pay for it.

What features would you like to see in your ideal “iPhoto for Video” application?

  1. What an interesting idea. Kind of like Pixadex for icons. I believe these content organisation apps that store files in databases really are the best way to organise one’s data. Even though I don’t see myself buying yFlicks for almost 1000 INR, I don’t see why someone else wouldn’t.

I currently use Democracy Player to both download and organise my videos. It can download videos from all of the popular video sharing sites like Google Video, YouTube, Revver and DailyMotion. It can also subscribe to video podcasts and BitTorrent feeds. I do most of my viewing in Front Row, but sometimes I just play stuff back in Democracy.

Glenn, do you think yFlicks is a potential Tubular competitor? I know Democracy is. But both Democracy and yFlicks do more than just download and organise YouTube clips.

The only thing I’d like to see is yFlicks go Open Source so that people can port it to other platforms like Linux.

  2. I was going to include that yFlicks is a potential YouTube competitor in the post, then I thought about it. yFlicks is for organizing your media, with the option of converting videos from YouTube to iPod format.

Whilst Tubular is 100% based on YouTube and online media. It allows you to browse, play, favorite, and download videos. It’s a far more focused application that appeals to a similar market trying to do something a little different to what yFlicks achieves.

  3. You mean, Tubular, I assume?

  4. I don’t have much need for it, but to be successful, they’d need to have a few things:

-Sync with iPod, not just export options, but actually sync with iTunes and iPod, without copying the videos.

-Browsing YouTube, search, browse, playback, and download, all from within the app.

-Upload to YouTube from within the app, handling all conversions in the process.

I downloaded this, when I saw the post about this in TUAW. I fell in love instantly. I haven’t tried the YouTube features yet though.

I was 100% sure that you would make a blog post concerning yFlicks, Glenn!

  6. “Reader hangout”. Smooth Glenn, smooth.

  7. Did you see this mentioned on TUAW first? Or did you get an exclusive?

  8. [...] the media player called yFlicks I blogged about a while back? Many Tricks Software have released an update to the application, taking it to version [...]
