What I’d Like To, But Won’t See At WWDC

WWDC is fast approaching and is now less than one week away. That’s 7 sleeps left to go on the calendar of a hardcore Mac fanatic, I for one am looking forward to sitting down Tuesday morning with a nice warm hot chocolate and “watching” the MacRumors text commentary of the Keynote tick by.

We all have our silent (and not so silent) wishes for the event, here’s a few I’d personally love to see, but don’t realistically see happening at WWDC.

Mac Pro’s Updated To An All 8-Core Lineup

I’m on the verge of making a purchase over the next few weeks and I’d be tipped to do so immediately by on Apple’s part to raise the Mac Pro’s to an all 8-Core lineup. I can see this happening in the near future, but not as close as WWDC. Besides, why in the world would I need 8 Cores? One update I could see happening is an update to the (aging) stock video card inside the tower.

New Mid-Range Tower Labeled The “Mac”

I’ve heard complaints on various Mac centric forums for months now about the lack of a mid-range Mac tower, fitting in-between the iMac and Mac Pro in the desktop lineup. Such a machine could feature a single Intel Xeon chip, dual drive bays, support for dual displays, and 4 RAM slots for support of up to 8GB of memory.

I could see these selling like crazy if priced correctly, as prosumers jumped on a headless Mac where they could add their own displays and not be tied into the “All in one” non upgradeable iMac.

Cheaper Apple Cinema Displays

Apple Cinema Display’s have been known for two things in the past. Their sexy style, and their outright enormous price tags. In order to pull me away from a Dell display route I’d like to see Apple release updated Cinema Displays (Non-LED) with Built-in-iSight cameras, at a lower price point than the current monitors.

What are your wishes for hardware updates at WWDC?

  1. Yea, Leopard secret features will definitely be cool. I’m guessing it’s some cool 3D user interface, but this is Apple so anything else is possible.

Aargh, I’m just waiting to buy the 6G iPod.

Could be a new iPod even though I don’t see a touch screen iPod coming, a bigger display would suck a lot of battery life and I don’t see a flash-based 6G iPod would cost lots of money to produce.

As for the Leopard secrets, a new theme/look and feel is a must, 3D user interfaces are just dreams…

A Leopard + iWork(with a new spreadsheet application) + iLife all in one could be a good possibility to attract Windows XP/Vista+Office users since you pay a lot less for Leopard and company and get a lot more.

//Damn how I love the before-WWDC time, a lot of excitement.

Just price drops. That’s all I want.

  4. Well i want to see new iMacs and the back to school deal to be brought to UK so i can purchase a brand new 20″ iMac with a nice 8GB Black Nano :]

  5. Price drops, and upgraded iMac specs. Oh, and more ports on the ACD series.

  6. A mid range tower would be amazing, and if not then an updated design on the iMac would also be sweet.

Jeremy — I’d get an iMac if they ditched the “chin” design. That thing bugs me.

That would be the perfect scenario for me considering that I’d definitely get a Macbook Pro before going to university and I don’t own a iPod(cheap chinese mp3 players rock!)

Let’s hope WWDC will bring a new updated ACD :)

ps: I predict Glenn having a tech-orgasm then he’ll wake up and check Apple’s updated page.

Haha ye dont they just lol i have too i need a new one and this week will go very slow until WDDC im sure of it!

  10. To be honest, I don’t see either significantly cheaper displays or all 8-core Mac Pros. BUT, I do see the midrange Mac coming.

Sorry, but it just seems like you want stuff that will make your purchases cheaper. Which is totally cool, but very idealistic.

  11. “What I’d Like To, But Won’t See At WWDC”

    That rhymes.

  12. I am really hoping they don’t upgrade the Mac Pros because I just bought one. Although it is already more horse power than I need, I would still feel bummed if they upgraded the processors and video cards while lowering the price only a few weeks after I picked mine up.

Maybe they’ll announce a MacBook Ultraportable…. I’m still running round with my 12″ PowerBook and would love to see it’s Intel counterpart hit the market.

  13. iPhone without the phone, and without the major price tag… I’d pay 350-400 for a wide touchscreen iPod

  14. I want a date when we will see Leopard and the next iLife.

I also agree on the Cinema Displays. Not too bothered on the intergrated iSight but I would LOVE 6 or 7 different inputs similar to the Dell 24″ LCD, where I could connect my Mac, DVD player, Xbox 360 etc, all to the one display. Even if I had to buy Apple cables, I really just want to connect a variety of devices to one large display.

Cheaper displays are a must. Price drop and thinner - we have waited too long.

  15. Dropped price on ACDs. It’s very unlikely though, since the reduced the price some months ago.

An announcement that iLife 07 is bundled with Leopard. I don’t want to spend extra money on iLife xD.

A new Mighty Mouse. The current one sucks..

  16. Am confused!!! WWDC is really about the developers and apps etc, so why should be expect and hardware announcements. I rememeber the exact same debate last year, and people were upset that the iPhone didn’t get announced etc.

Anyway - to join in - a mid range is about the only thing that would get me excited, maybe a ‘tower’Mac mini with Apple TV integrated, and a quicker processor, better video card, dual screen capability etc.
