What Gets Delivered To Your Email Inbox?
Update: I’ve decided to change my plan of attack, and lighten the load a little. Blog comments & Flickr activity now get directed into my RSS reader.
A few weeks ago I changed all my social web accounts to send emails to me when activity happened on my profiles/accounts. My volume of email has increased, but it makes a handy collection ground so I don’t need to trace around the web checking for updates as frequently. When something happens, I hear about it straight away.
What gets delivered to my inbox?
All I used to have delivered into my inbox was general & contact form email - the volume was rather light. Now with all of these coming in from above, I get around 40-60 emails a day. I dont find it too hard to manage as I have many specific Smart Folders setup in Mail which make the task simple and easy.
The question is, what do you like having delivered to your email inbox?

I, myself really look forward to activity on my Flickr photos as well as comments on my blog. I’ve found that these days I rarely get email *not* automatically generated by a web service.

Kristiano → www.kristianoang.com
General correspondence, Twitter, Flickr, kristianoang.com comments, couple of mailing lists I subscribe to.

cawlin → cawlin.com/blog
Most of these things i get through my RSS feed reader. This way I am able to separate content/articles and automated messages from the real people trying to contact me.
A good trick I learned was to sign up for a gmail account that I will use only for web services then grab the atom feed through a feed reader, tah dah.
I like my inbox to only contain messages from friends family and work.

You’ve got me thinking now, Glenn. I normally get a lot of this stuff through to my inbox, but it would make a lot more sense to stream it to RSS.
I think I prefer to use my inbox for communication and my RSS to receive information. All I need it the time to set some of this stuff up!

Indeed, a lot of this makes more sense to get through RSS. I might have to look into that at some point!
At the moment, I get new comments on my blog, occasional follow-up comments on other blogs, a couple mailing lists, and a few other automated services (watchlists and so on), to my inbox. I have a few filters and folders setup though, so it’s pretty organized.

I get blog and flickr comments sent to mine.

I get twitter friend updates, blog comment updates, and conventional email and maybe a newsletter here and there. I can’t think of anything else right now. Yeah, I think it’s a smart move to not have “everything” sent to your email. It could get hefty on a big day.
Interesting idea. Thank Apple for smart folders.

I get my site’s activity (comments, contact form), Virbº notivications, twitter adds, and my follow up comments all in addition to the 25 - 30 personal emails I get since thats how we communicate where I work.
I also have my site’s RSS comment feed and am wondering why I have that and the emails? One thing I liked about getting new comments emailed to me was that I could quickly search and compare to see if it was a new commentor or not, and send them a ‘welcome to the site’ email. But now, storing all comments is getting bulky.
Glenn, I’m curious if you have a method for responding to comments?

SpockI get 5 or 6 C|NET newsletters a day. Slashdot. Netflix. Apple. Some tennis newsletters every now and then. Some Christian newsletters and some emails from my sisters. Oh and my inbox is filled with “Someone just responded to your comment” from MacDailyNews(I go by the same name). But I’m just now getting into Twitter(added you Glenn) and I IM often.

alej744Twitter, form e-mail, general e-mail, follow-ups on other blogs. ThinkGeek newsletters, notifications.
40-60 e-mails a day though? dayum

A method for responding to comments? In what way? :-)

Hi Glenn, my name is Jehan and I am originally from Sri Lanka but have lived in England all my life. Sri Lanka are playing New Zealand next I think, so it should be a good match. I know this is quite random, but I’m in a big cricket mood at the moment. I’ve got U15 county trials coming up. :D

@ Glenn: Let me clarify by saying how I respond to comments: When I check new mail I usually have a handful of comments that range over more than one post. I open up each post with a new comment in a browser tab, read throught the new comments and then respond to them.

My process is checking which posts have new comments, then I open each of these posts in separate tabs, and individually respond to the comments on each post.
Sounds cool! New Zealand play Ireland tomorrow, then Sri-Lanka after that. I expect Australia, NZ, Sri-Lanka, and South Africa to make the semi-finals.

You should make a World Cup ‘07 post. :D

After reading your post I switched up my Flickr and other items that I could to read through my RSS reader. Much better. I also found that there were some that I was monitoring by logging in and checking at each site. I just grabbed those feeds. Big time savings too.
As far as a full inbox from junk, I had to work up a new email for contacts to use as mine was destroyed with spam and notifications. That has made life much better in just the past week.

Glenn, may I ask you a stupid question, what do you mean by ‘Google daily updates for “Glenn Wolseyâ€?’, is this a kind of service that google will report to you daily bases about where are you in the search engine? how to sign up? cheers mate…

Don’t feel stupid for asking Rusty, the service is called Google Trends. Simply make a search then click to “Subscribe to email updates.”

jayp80Right now I don’t have too much coming in. Just my personal emails and some newletters i like. But I think I’m going to take your advice and get most stuff sent to email or newsfire. It is a headache too have to visit website just to get updates.
