Views On The New Touch/Classic iPods

Blog reader Jan sent me three emails over the past 24 hours with iPod related questions. Jan, since I’ve taken so long to answer your emails, I though I’d take the opportunity to address these questions in a blog post.
iPod Touch
One iPod I plan on purchasing is the iPod touch, not sure yet on which model, 8GB vs 16GB. I sold off my 60GB iPod last week to fund the purchase, now I’m tossing up the possibility of selling my 2nd generation nano and getting the 16GB version, or keeping the nano and picking up the 8GB touch.
Ether way, I want an iPod touch because it’s the device I’ve been asking for since the iPhone was released, the iPhone without the Phone.
iPod Classic
I love that Apple have come to realize the ‘iPod’ needed a real name. The line has became rather confusing over the past couple of years. With the announcement of the iPod classic it all makes much more sense.
It can be compared to Toyota coming out with their first car and calling it the Toyota - with successor cars being named the Toyota Swift, and the Toyota Drift. You still have a sense of confusion with which one is talking about the main product, the Toyota. Are they talking about the original, or a successor?
Enough about the car talk, the iPod classic is excellent value. If you already have an iPhone and want to upgrade your iPod, the new classic is excellent value. 80GB for $250? I’d take that in a second if I already had an iPhone.
Have you purchased any of the new iPods yet? If so, what did you put you cash down for?
Update: I’ve ordered the 16GB iPod touch.

ElliotI ordered the 8GB iPod Touch, looks like an excellent device. Can’t wait to get it later this month/early next month.

PieterI want the opposite thing: I want the iPhone, without the music, photo’s and videos… Is there any information about an iPhone nano?

Glenn, looking forward to your views on the iPod Touch. I think the 16GB is the best choice. With a device like that, 8GB fills up.
I love that the Nano is video capable now so I plan on most likely picking one up. I need to see the colors in person but I’m leaning towards Black.

I did like you Glenn. I sold my 5Gen iPod and ordered a 16GB iPod Touch. I’m not too bugged about the capacity, but I kind of would like a Mail app and a Maps app on the iPod Touch. Hopefully Apple will allow third-party apps or build it in. The iPod Touch could be the one product that is going to revolutionize the mobile computing industry.

No word yet about an iPhone Nano, not sure if we ever will be seeing something like this especially down to the price drop of the iPhone yesterday. It’s priced very, very, well now.
I’d love to go 16GB, just not sure if I’m willing to spend the extra $180 to double storage. I’d almost be better to get a Nano & Touch. I’ll see how it pans out.

Congrats on 200.
Anyway, I’m gonna get one for my birthday hopefully (Oct. 9th), and 16GB version.
I don’t know if I should sell or keep my 5th gen.

I. WANT. A TOUCH. NOW.
or for my birthday.
The problem is, the stupid thing doesn’t ship until the 28th and my birthday is the 15th.
Damn.
Regardless, the touch looks frickin awesome, and me wantee.

TaylorI’ll definitely be going with the iPod Classic here. The Touch seems like it would be more fragile and draw too much attention while riding the bus in the city. Plus, that isn’t nearly enough space to have a good variety of music and videos combined. Can’t wait to pic up my 80GB this weekend.

JamieHmmm….am really torn. I’ve been waiting for an iPhone but with the released of the touch am thinking i should snap this up for on the go ipoding, keep my 30GB for heavy storage and save myself the contractual obligations associated with getting an iPhone (2 yr contract etc)
The other option would be to wait for the iPhone as planned (get the ipod touch + phone) and just get an 80GB classic to replace the 30GB Video iPod i was intending to give away originally.
Argghhh decisions…..

I picked up a new iPhone yesterday.
My current carrier’s contract doesn’t expire for two more weeks, but yesterday seemed like a good day to buy an iPhone. So at the moment it is hanging in its dock looking hot.

Argh, if only I had a job! I’d be all over the Touch, since I just got a new mobile and 18month contract after there being no sign of the iPhone in the UK. The Touch looks very nice and I was initially thinking 8GB but then if I put some video on it that’s not a lot left for music, so 16GB seems more sensible. I don’t need my whole library in my pocket.

Ruan EllisIn my opinion, it is a shame that they currently won’t be selling the Touch with a Hard Drive of 60GB+, as that would tempt me into getting one alot more! Maybe when they do, I will get one so I actually have a Portable Music player!

Congratulations on the 300th post! I plan on getting the low end iPod touch. It’s exactly what I want. =P Too bad we have to wait till the end of September.

Once I scrape every couch crevice for change I shall be picking up the iPod Touch. I can’t wait to use all the handy iPhone apps on it, and finally being able to listen/watch Podcasts (I currently have the shuffle).

I am definitely going to score a new 80GB Classic. Right now my girlfriend has my 30GB black video, so I am gonna let her keep that and I’ll upgrade :) I’m the gadget freak after all.

I just ordered an iPod Touch. I’m impressed just by how fast it is. Oh, and the interface is really cool.

I’ll be getting an iPod Touch 8GB. 8GB does seem kinda small, but I’ve only had an iPod nano 4GB in the past, and I never filled it! Now I know, I’ll have video, but I only watch a few video podcasts, and I’m in Canada, so no iTunes movies / TV Shows. I do like the look of the iPod Classic, but as you say, I want an iPhone without the phone! However, I do *need* Mail.app on it, and *hope* maps comes on it. iPod Nano (codename (FAT) nano) I think is ugly, but not as ugly as the rumor sites’ images were. The new iPod Shuffle colors aren’t nice, I liked the old ones, and I’ll miss the orange iPod Shuffle :-(
Great post Glenn, and congrats on your 300th post!!!

While I’ve also been awaiting a device similar to the iPod Touch, I wish it had more space. Such little drive space for so much screen real estate and music seems really dumb for me. While I could make do with a couple movies, music and movies all on that space, plus the inevitable extra applications hacked in, would be way too much on so little space.

A part of my paycheck tomorrow will be going towards the 16GB iPod Touch. I can’t wait to play around with it in a couple/few weeks!

Hi Glenn,
Ordered a 16GB iPod Touch straight away - I’m fed up of waiting for the iPhone here in the UK!

I’ll get the 16GB model. 8GB might be too little. New iPod Nano is cool too, especially the pricing.
#23
GregIf you are one who is looking for Mail in the iPod touch, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Apple is marketing the iPhone not the iPod as a PDA, so it makes sense to separate the two products.
I think I’ll end up ordering a 16GB Touch later this month.

I really like the look of the new video nanos. 8gbs of storage is good enough for me plus, have you seen the size of the new nanos?
#25
AshleyI think the iPod touch looks cracking. I already have a 30GB iPod which still has so much space left, as well as a shuffle I received free when upgrading my phone so I really can’t justify buying a new iPod. If anything happens to my 30GB I’ll be going for the 16GB iPod Touch.

Im ordering the iPod touch as soon as it is released, it looks amazing, so glad I had some spare cash lying around. I agree about the value of the ipod classic, for less than the 8gb touch you can get a whopping 80gb classic! Just dying to use that touch screen though :)

I just purchased a 2nd gen 2GB nano. Dirt cheap now that the new nanos are on the market. I simply did, since I need it for the nike+ kit and I don’t like the new nano’s design plus I don’t need the extra applications like video playback while I’m running.
Besides that I will definetly go for the iPod touch. I’m just not sure yet which model. 8 or 16 GB???

I am curently in the process of selling my 5.5G 30GB iPod Video to fund the purchase of an 8GB iPod nano. I already have the 4GB iPod nano PRODUCT(RED) edition, and I am in love with it. But, I feel that my video iPod is neglected. So, I will use the new Nano as my main audio/video player, and keep the RED nano for sentimental reasons as it was my first iPod which I purchased with my own money.

I almost got the iPod touch, but ultimately got the 8GB nano. To me, the $100 extra wasn’t worth the big screen and Wi-Fi. We don’t have a wireless network in my house, and not at school either, so it would end up being underused. And the big screen is nice, but it also means there are no physical buttons (for control while in pockets and such). And the nano is tiny, and it now plays video, so that settled it.
The iPod touch is a really nice device, but I think overall, the nano is a better choice for me. It was just shipped from China, Delivery Status tells me :)

David LeedyGlenn,
I see you’ve ordered the iPod touch. you might want to be careful here as it seems to be somewhat crippled compared to the iPhone, depending on what you want it for. I just saw a post somewhere that said you can’t add calander events via the touch.. it was for reading only. I’m not sure about contacts, but if you can’t add calender entries, then this is really just a player and might not be as enticing….

CurtisThe iPod Touch is in many ways the iPod that never was. I thnk long before the iPhone was ever announced, people have been wanting (wonting?) an iPod with touch screen with some PDA capabilities. Apple having decided to exclude an stylus and more PDA traits really cripples the Touch in some degree. Mail/GPS functions would have made it that much more sweeter.
It isn’t perfect but it’s a good comprismise. I will be getting an 8GB version myself.

AllanI purchased an iPod touch 16GB two weeks ago and I think it is a great device. The Wi-Fi capabilities are great and the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store is a nice application. The Multi-Touch interface is really easy to use although you always need to clean the screen after using it.. Music, videos and photos look great on the 3.5″ screen.
If you’re planning to buy an iPod touch 8GB or 16GB, go for it! You’ll be happy with it.
Glenn, I was wondering if you were going to jailbreak your iPod touch, or if you were going to keep it original.. Thanks!
