Top 10 Mac Setups With Dell Displays
I decided to put together a quick list of ten great Mac setups consisting of Dell displays following up last weeks list of the Top 10 Multi Display Mac Setups. I strongly believe Apple Cinema Displays out-class Dell marginally in terms of style, the new “07″ series of Dell screens look stunning. Yes..I know the first one is not a Mac (a MacBook is out of the shot), but it looks so good I couldn’t not include it.

The first one doesn’t look much like a Mac, and you listed Derek’s setup twice…

Derek → 5thirtyone.com
Hey, two mentions! ;) Dell’s definitely have a little style of their own.
#3
Joe Jacobs → www.causingshadow.com
The first one looks like Vista…..

Lol. Yeah, my favorite one is Steve Keys’. Nice post though, Glenn!
#5

The first is Pirillo’s setup with dual-30’s. http://live.pirillo.com

Ronald Heft → cavemonkey50.com
It looks like Chris Pirillo is using Vista not OS X.

Glenn! You are making me want that monitor more and more!

Mac first Mac first Mac first, get the Mac first then the display. You won’t regret it ;-)

All great - funny thing? Only one desk has any kind of paper (a notebook) on it - has the paperless office finally arrived????
#12
zzap → zzaps.com
I could never understand what Chris had positioned his secondary monitor off-center like that.
“… it looks so good I couldn’t not include it.”
Couldn’t not? Great grammar skills their, Glenn. :P
#13
RyanI remember linking to the setup with the Western Digital (eighth down) in your post What Do You Value? Style vs Price to tempt you to a nice Dell monitor.
That’s my favorite setup out of the mix. I hope to get one like it in the near future. Only my problem is not finding the right monitor or the right Mac. It’s finding the right desk!

Great grammar skills there, zzap.
Also, I could never understand WHY.

@Macintalk Design: zomfg! I suck at life! Thanks for the correction. I was drunk earlier. Well… that’s my excuse, anyways.

The 5th setup(1×30inch) is just wrong, I mean, now I understand why people prefer dual 20 or 23’s over one 30”, too much pain in the neck.
My personal fav, the 2nd one, Steve Keys.

Besides the fact that you included Derek’s setup twice, great list. By the tone of this post, I’m going to go ahead and assume your’s will be on here by the end of the year.

These are nice, but not the same as the Apple Display setups. I just got my 23″ ACD yesterday and don’t regret the extra that it cost. Considering it’s what I look at most of the day, it helps that I smile when I see it.

Stefaan → www.novoblog.be
Nice setups but I prefer ACD’s :) What are these lights above Pirillo’s screens?
#20
Andreas → xgrape.net
So wish I had gotten two of the Dells… oh well, maybe next life. Beautiful displays indeed. Then, the surroundings play an important part, too. If you got style, you can make any display look good.
#21

Here’s my bro Anand’s setup…
#22
Nick Danforth → nickdanforth.blogspot.com
As has been mentioned, these are very beautiful rigs, but nothing beats an ACD :)

makes me want to puke.

I think the paperless office is here Chris, I for one keep my desk perfectly clean and the only paper you’ll see in my room is physical mail.
I can totally understand how a single 30″ can be a little overwhelming. I’d prefer to move my head sideways than sideways and up and down..
Before the end of the year ;-) I’ve almost got enough saved now, just waiting on the house completion before I take the plunge.
They are LED clocks. They should be near the top of the popular items at ThinkGeek :-)
Wow! 8 Core Mac Pro and dual 2407 Dell’s? Looks pretty amazing to me.

EricPaperless office has always intrigued me. I read scientific articles for a living, how do you propose I operate sans le papier? I always thought that highlighting on the screen could work, but reading off the screen 24/7 sucks when compared with real print.
Curious to hear others’ opinions or suggestions.
Cheers,
Eric

I think these are the clocks: http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/lights/7437/
I never really liked the Dell displays. Sure, they’re cheaper and have more ports, but I really like the style of the ACDs. The Dells look too generic in my opinion.

Chris ‘MyAppleStuff’ Marshall → www.myapplestuff.com
I am going to show my age (44 this year)!!
“We” talked about the paperless office back in the late 80’s at the computer company I worked for. Someone coined the phrase “the paperless office is as realistic a concept as the paperless toilet”
I LOVE having less paper, but for some things I just can’t imagine having a paper format:
- to read a great book sat on the balcony in the sun with some wine
- to enjoy a paper and a coffee in a cafe
- to doodle on as I mull things over.
The computer has cut back the amount of paper that I haveto handle which is great - but totally paperless, never. Not because the technology wont allow, but because paper sometimes is best :-)

Thats a nice idea to display these. I always looked on the net for what i want next. I guess i’ll just save these to my bookmarks and come here next. Very inspiring. Keep up the good work. And i hope you come out with something for the Windows (Windoze) users!

Hey Glenn, my setup is actually 2 x 24″ 2405fpw displays.
Thanks for the mention!

Mike K.I have both a 20″ Dell 2007WFP and a 20″ Apple Cinema display and despite what I’ve heard about the panels being the same, the Apple definitely produces a sharper picture.
I’m connecting to both via DVI - the Dell display appears “sparkly”… I wonder if Dell applies a coating to the screen that causes this? The Apple is crystal clear.
Also of note: The *very* first time I powered up the Dell, I was greeted by what could only be described as a literal sea of stuck green pixels (we’re talking hundreds of them). After letting the monitor sit for 10 mins or so everything cleared up and it’s been fine ever since.
I do like the styling of both monitors - also, the VGA and other video inputs on the Dell are nice to have. Plus the price is right. But there’s just something about cinema displays…

Jarrod C.There seems to be one critical point that you’re all missing here. Besides the fact that my Dell 2407 is an inch larger than the 23″ Cinema display, besides the fact that my 2407 has built-in card readers and also doubles as a video monitor… besides all that, it also swivels to a portrait mode! As a web designer, sometimes width isn’t king. I like to pivot my monitor sometimes so I can see all of the web site at once, without scrolling!
#38
James CI have to agree with Jarrod. I looked closely at the Cinema Display vs. 2407 before going with the latter, and I have had no complaints after several months of usage. It’s a great monitor, and is actually the only thing that I have purchased from Dell in many years that isn’t total crap.
