The Canon 135L

I’ve had the Canon 135 f/2L series lens in my possession for over two months now, and it has completely exceeded initial expectation - now sitting in the line as my favorite lens, ahead of the marvelous Canon 24-70 f/2.8L.

Sharp wide open at f/2, super fast autofocus, a beautiful smooth depth of field at low aperture settings, and a perfect focal length for long range landscape/short range sports are a few of the areas where this lens really shines.

One of the things I’ve been most pleased with other than the sharpness wide open is the superb autofocus performance. When the lens is switched to focus at 1.6 meters to infinity, focus locks in at a rapid pace, perfect for fast moving subjects in the distance. When set to 0.9 meters to infinity, the Canon 135L becomes a versatile lens allowing excellent macro and close up images to be taken.

The Canon 135L has made me fall in love with prime lenses all again, the same way the Canon 50 f/1.4 did. While the Canon 24-70L is an excellent zoom lens, it never took this kind of effect on me or my images. The 135L will be attached to my camera for some time to come.

  1. It looks a rather impressive lens. Though it should be with that sort of price tag!

What are you looking at purchasing next for your camera kit, Glenn? I would have thought that by the sound of things you want a new body, maybe a 5D mk2 in June? :-).

  2. Wow, saying that it gives you the same feeling the 50 f/1.4 does is saying a lot. I’ve been using the 50 f/1.4 for a two months and love it — it’s on my camera 90% of the time now. While zooms are flexable, there’s nothing like the mastery you feel with prime lens — it’s more satisfying than it should be, I’m still not sure why yet. I’d love to hear about wide primes if you get into it.

  3. Interesting Glenn - I like the last shot of the hands.

On a side note, I’m currently deciding whether to buy a zoom or a prime for my second lens.

I have the Canon 400D with the default lens (18-55). And the general consensus seems to be that people buy a zoom as their second lens. But I’m considering getting a prime instead as people seem to really notice the difference in image quality. (As you’ve just shown!)

And I know that people say it “depends on the type of photos you are going to take” - but I’m just a beginner, so I take all types of photos at the moment - landscape, portait, macro, etc.

Any comments on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers
    Dennis

  4. Jonathan - I’m thinking maybe the original 5D used once prices fall later this year. That’s if I’m in a financial position to pick one up.

Dennis - I’d go with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM as your next lens.

    Glenn,

There is a lovely natural progression withe your photos. Your skills are developing a great deal. Although my other half has a 5D, and all L series glass I am thinking of picking myself up a canon and think a prime will be my first lens. I am thinking an 85mm firstly.

Great work - keep it up!

  6. I love pictures 1 and 3 the 3 becuase its give me like patien to wait for something that i haven see yet.I need i camere and i dont know which one to buy.

  7. impressive… what could you recommend to buy to a beginner photographer? i’m talking about something that costs not so much but allows me to make shots with near-to-yours quality? :)

  8. out of curiosity (i’ve been looking at buying that same lens).. have you been using a hood on it for those shots taken above or ?

  9. No hood for any of the shots above, with the exception being the jet ski.
