Ten Thousand Later Digg Still Has A Hold
Unlike many others, I haven’t been with Digg since its inception in 2003. I’ve been a member of the worlds largest social bookmarking site since August 14, 2005. Since then I have submitted 174 stories, with a success rate of 24% from my 42 homepage stories.
Almost two years of my short life have been accomplished with Digg set as my browser homepage. I’ve found it handy to have the latest in the world of technology news directly in front of me when I launch Safari throughout the day. It’s a way to keep me connected and “in the know” of recent happenings and announcements. Digg can be simply described as my portal to the web.
Kevin Rose and the team at Digg have done a great job continuing to add new features to the site, while not groundbreaking, each new additional feature makes Digg a better and more enjoyable place for all who love sharing Technology, Sport, Business, or Offbeat News. There’s something for everyone.
Interestingly enough, the ten thousandth story I dugg was relevant to the fashionable topic of late, Apple’s new iPhone which I have purposely overlooked writing about to this day due to two facts. The point of fact I haven’t touched one yet, and secondly, I’ve found it to be a little over-talked on blogs over the past few days, hold on, make that months.
Moving back to the point of the topic, I’ve been a Digg member for just on two years now and it still has a hold on me. There’s something seemingly refreshing about Digg which keeps me coming back for more. I don’t know if it’s the downright widespread and opinionated community, or my desire to keep up to the minute with the latest tech news. All I know is that two years later, Digg still has a hold on me which won’t cease anytime soon.
How do you feel about Digg? How long have you been a member, how many stories have you dugg, and what keeps you coming back for more?

Ondra SoukupDigg ? It’s speed in/to czech republic and the overall bloatness with JS which kills my computer on every page load…no thanks, when I’ve been first to digg it’s been like this…that’s the first impression I had and it’s something that can’t be changed :/
But I browse the front page stories sometimes when I feel like I have nothing else to do…

I think what keeps me coming back to digg is also the need to keep up with the latest tech news. Some of the community is also knowledgeable, so I sometimes learn new things from the comments.

Digg is awesome. Clinton-Presidency, awesome. I’ve dugg 2,850 stories in the 11 months I’ve been a member. Honestly, Diggnation keeps me coming back. Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht have established such a personal relationship with Digg users, it’s really hard not to use the site. Also, the Videos are extremely funny and a blast to watch.

I was a Digg user, but am now reformed having seen the error of my ways.
Some of the news stories are OK, but most end up on someone-or-anothers blog anyway.
The users, or more specifically those that comment seem to be people I would never ever want to be in the same room with in real-life - therefore I’ve only ever been back through accidentally clicking on a link I didn’t realise was Digg. Maybe Digg encourages these types because a similarly open public commenting forum like Newsvine doesnt for my mind have anywhere near the same proportion of asshats on it.
It’s only a small gesture, but if more of us didn’t go to Digg for the same reason then maybe they’d sort out these commentors.

I am not a big DIGG user. I keep trying to get more into it, but as an overall perception I have found the users pretty rude (as opposed to 9rules Notes) and it seems more a case of quality rather than quality.
I am a little tired with people ‘begging’ to be dugg as well. Please guys - let me make my own mind up, don’t become and ‘internet begger’.
I love the concept, will no doubt keep trying to get into it a bit more but it hasn’t really struck me as that great yet (over at least a year).
There was a good thread on 9rules recently which pretty much stacked up with my thoughts.
Wow - good post though, didn’t realise I had so much to get off my chest!!!

I check it every day. It was through Digg I found your site.

I check it often, and it always has great stories, but the comment section can become tiring. It’s very anti-apple, and pretty much anti-everything.

It’s always fun to look back on these types of things. I’ve been a member since January of 2006, and dugg a little over 9000 articles myself. While the community may be overly biased in many cases, it still is a great place to find news that, most of the time, I personally find interesting. What’s always funny though is that I read an “odd news” article in, say, May, then my Dad brings up the same topic two months later after seeing it on the local news!
At times, digging has become a nuisance, but I keep it up. It’s like Google’s Web History… keep it up and you’ve developped this fantastic mini-biography of things you are interested in. It’s like a fast and easy way to create a daily journal or timecapsule of your life. I’m sure at some point I’ll stop digging stories, but I can’t see such a scenario occuring anytime in the near future.

digg is my number one source for interesting news and pics. I check it several times a day (often several an hour).

I’ve been a digg member for just about 1 year, but i browsed the front page for a year prior to joining.
I think you highlighted the best parts of digg already: the tech news is often bleeding edge — even though there are a lot of people complaining lately about aspects of the news being reported. The community also can provide both a vast source of knowledge, and / or humor.
Two more things: i enjoy the random funny posts / pictures you find on there, but i also don’t like the overly critical aspects of the community: it can be quite frustrating when everyone posting seems to think they know everything.
EDIT: i also like jimmyr.com because it offers very cut and dry browsing of the news.

Digg is the first social network I ever joined (April ‘06), and I have to say it has really really grown on me. I don’t think I’ll ever stop digging. Ever.
