Laptopless, Losing Stress, And Current Life Situation

Last week I listed my week three Core Duo MacBook for sale on TradeMe, an auction site similar to eBay but specific for New Zealanders. I listed the laptop with intention to update it to a newer Core 2 Duo model, meaning I’d get a faster processor, the newer Airport card, and a fresh clean laptop for a very small chunk of change.

Yesterday when the money was sitting in my account and I was about to head to Apple and purchase a new laptop, I stopped dead in my tracks and made a decision to go without a laptop for the next few months..I’m already reaping the rewards on not having the computer attached to me 24/7.

A few close friends will know of my current living situation, others won’t. We currently have rennovations going on at our house and they’ll be going for another couple of months, the blog I linked to is a daily jornal kept by my mother on happenings. Everything is super hectic around here, and we’re temporarily living between our house in its current state, and the neighbours house.

My iMac (my new main machine for now) is at the neighbours where my Airport reception won’t reach, so I’m having a relaxing time leaving work at work (IE: the nehibours house). When I come home I’m not thinking about the computer, but getting to do other things such as reading, writing on paper (big change), and spending time taking photos.

I’m starting to become accustomed to this way of life though I’m immensely looking forward to moving into our completed house, and having a permanent desktop computer in my room, with a laptop for when I’m out and on the move.

I’ll also take this chance to apologise to anyone who will be emailing me over the next 6-8 weeks if my emails aren’t replied to within 6-12 hours - I’ll be replying to emails each evening instead of constantly throughout the day. Oh, and anyone want to send me their RSS feed OPML file? I forgot to copy mine off the MacBook before the fresh install and have to re-build mine from scratch *bangs head*.

A couple more months and my life will be back in order.

At least you’re almost at the point of internet-zen. I’m currently working towards it.

  3. It’s alright, Glenn!

  4. Looks like things are changing around a bit eh? But all for the good. Just wait and you’ll pull through!

  6. I like having my computer with me all the time, because blogging and browsing is pretty relaxing. But, I wouldn’t have anything to do if I didn’t have my macbook, except tv, and sleeping.

Cool that you have more time to take photos, and read, but I can’t write on paper (penmanship too horrible)

Anyway, good luck on the house, and I sent you my feeds. Not to mention, I blogged about spreading feeds to people, but no one has picked it up yet.

And, didn’t you upload your feeds a while ago anyway?

    Peace.

  7. Best of wishes to you Glenn.

  8. Yeah good luck Glenn!

  9. I just sold my laptop too. I’m looking on getting a MacBook Pro when the new ones come out.

  11. Thanks for all the nice comments guys, everything will work out perfectly, It’s just rather stressful at the moment, this post helped me escape a little an dlet things out.

Many thanks to Conner and Jordan for sharing their RSS feeds. I’ve managed to re-structure NewsFire.

You should backup your feeds to OPML share :)

  13. Glenn, it’s nice to have a personal post like this. Gives us a little insight into your personal situation. From the pictures on your Mom’s blog, looks like the renovations will be worth while. Best of luck. I know what it’s like…for the past year, I was in the process of getting this new room. The entire downstairs level was completed in February of 2007 after starting in February of 06. Though that is a short time for all we did, I am an impatient person, haha.

Looking forward to hearing about your Mac Pro when you get it. Hope you got a nice chunk of change for your MacBook. :)

  14. Wow, you really have a family of connected people, with your mom blogging the renovations ;) Very cool. Hopefully being away from home isn’t too painful (well, you know, I like my room), and good luck.

  15. As we discussed - not always a bad thing to take a step back and really evaluate your needs rather than just rush head first in ‘must replace’ mode.

Having done something very similar - but at a much later stage of life and with respect to the whole career/lifestyle thing I can vouch that a re-evaluation and achieving a balance is well worth any short term frustrations!!

  16. I burnt out of the laptop lifestyle in college. I hadn’t bought one in seven years. In fact, I often encouraged people who wanted laptop advice to buy a desktop instead. On a numbers-only comparison comperable iMacs will thrash any Mac laptop.

However, I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. (Even though I didn’t strictly need CompUSA had them on clearance and it was just too good a deal to pass up.)

Now, I can live with a laptop every waking minute of my life. I just choose not to.

  17. Best of luck mate! Internet-zen state is pretty cool :D

  18. Let me know when it’s done so I can come over to New Zealand and visit!

  20. Yeah i completely understand, i once listed my old MacBook on eBay before i purchased my MacPro and decided to wait a full month before ordering it just to live without technology attached to me 24/7. Quite relieving isn’t it.
