InstantShot: Taking Screenshots, The Smart Way

Screenshots can help explain a process so much easier than words, screenshots can help capture readers and reel them in to read more, and they can make articles look stylish and pretty. But screenshots are at times a hassle to capture, it’s a time consuming task many of you dont want to have anything to do with. That stops now, as InstantShot! has taken the scene and made the task of taking screenshots as simple one one, two, three.

InstantShot 2.1 is a small freeware utility which sits in your menu-bar. It gives you endless screen-capturing options to freeze any application, screen, or window in time.

When you click on the icon in the menubar, you are presented with a drop down contextual menu list giving you options to shoot screen, shoot inside a rect, shoot with timer, and start multiple shots. With all of these options InstantShot is perfect to take any type of screenshot at anytime you need to call it up.

In addition to these different capturing modes, you have the option to choose save destination, the quality of the captured images, and the ability to have the cursor removed from screenshots.

One exciting feature InstantShot offers is the ability to take multiple screenshots for as long as you want at a pre-defined interval. This opens up many creative uses for your screenshots, such as creating animated movies from them.

InstantShot 2.1 is a free download from Digital Waters.

  1. If you want professional sreengrabs there is just one! But yes there are a few variants around but nothing comes close to Snapzpro :)

  2. Looks cool! I’ve started doing lots of screen shots for my blog in the past couple days. So far I’ve used (Shift Cmd 4) and the spacebar to get shots of entire windows alone.

Then I use QuickScale to resize the images to fit perfectly.
    I wrote about it here:

    This app looks really good.

Wow, I’ve never heard of this before! And it’s great! And FREE!

    Thanks ^^

  4. Sounds like a great little tool. Too bad there is not one similar to it for Windows, maybe there is, I just haven’t looked. Does anyone know?

  5. Apple+Shift+3
    or
    Apple+Shift+4 (+ optional spacebar)

    Good enough, and free :-P

  6. Nice find. I’ve been using a nice widget called “Capture” for all of my screenshots but I’ll definitely give InstantShot a try.

  7. “Apple+Shift+3 or Apple+Shift+4 (+ optional spacebar)

I’m with Michael, that works fine for me on my Mac — although on XP I use SnagIt.

  8. @ zzap:

Thanks. I will check SnagIt out.

  9. +1 for Snapzpro. This utility has saved me hours of time for my user guides and blog posts.

  11. Awesome little utility!

  12. The TUAW guys are the worst. They got wind of InstantShot via the digg submission of this post, and didn’t even link back to you, Glenn. So much for ethics. I’m unsubscribing from their feed right now. I recommend that anyone else who likes Glenn’s blog should do the same.

  13. This isn’t the first time they’ve done stuff like this. A few months back they mocked me in a post when I applied for a job with them.

  14. I apologise for getting worked up there. Glenn, could you please edit the insult out of my comment?

  16. Done. Now back onto discussing the application ;-)

  17. You can even change the file type of the default OS X screen capture utility, using a Tinkertool

  18. DeathAxe, I thought you could do that in Preview… I’m too lazy to check though.

Oh by the way, I’ve added the “j” onto my name. I am in fact wph, do not let the extra letter alarm you. ;)

Because wph is too short for WordPress, I did http://www.wphj.wordpress.com instead, and now I’m trying to keep things consistent.

  19. Seems like a good program. I use iShowU for screen recording, but I think I will try this out for screenshots. I am very surprised it is free.

  25. I think that for Mac OS X 10.4 is way better the Capture:
    http://www.vanillasoap.com/widgets/

Of course, this if you use the dasboard. It’s clean, very usable and doesn’t use any space on your desktop (a few pixels on the menu are still considered used space… much more if you’ve got a 12″ like me :D).

Try it out. Freeware too. :)
