Flow: FTP And Editing In Harmony

While browsing a few forums this morning, I stumbled across a link to FlowApp.com. Flow is a new FTP application in the works for the Mac.

Flow is a little different than other FTP applications available on OSX. One prominent feature which is taking the spotlight is the ability to edit files directly on the FTP server, other apps do this, but Flow will take it a step further and put you in control, making it much easier to edit files remotely.

Flow developer, Brian Amerige (of ExtendMac Software) has posted a screencast demonstrating the difference in speed between Flow and Transmit. The results are astonighing, with Flow uploading the directory of 300 files minutes quicker than Transmit.

    That’s cool! I’m using Yummy FTP because it’s the faster client at he moment, but I think that Flow will be even faster.

    Looks decent enough. If it’s better than Transmit, it may well be worth the switch. I’m not interested in Flow’s editor, per sé, I just want it to be quick and look good.

    I have TextMate and CSSEdit for my editing needs.

    Flow looks like it has a better user interface, but is uploading 300 files really a way to compare which app is better? The best feature in Transmit, that I have yet to see in any other app, is the ability to edit a file on the server in any application on Mac OS X. There will always be better apps for editing; an FTP app can’t handle everything. But if Flow has this feature, I’m sold.

    The performance comparison I did, like I mentioned in the video, was not intended to say “and this is why Flow is better than Transmit.” — that’ll come later. ;)

    It was simply a “take it for what it is” type of thing. You’ll be hearing a lot more about Flow in a few weeks (I’m hoping for a public beta in less than a month and a half’s time).

    As for being able to edit in any app in OS X, yep, Flow can do that. Be sure to try out Flow’s editing too though — I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

    I always use Cyberduck - check it out. Nice app but sometimes a little bit slow. Direct editing is possible with some text-editors, e.g. SubEthaEdit, CSSEdit und Smultron

    Doesn’t skEdit do what you claim - editing files w/i the ftp app?

    skEdit is definitely more of a “backburner” project. Development isn’t active, and even more importantly, assuming you’ve used skEdit, once you use Flow, you’ll see there’s really no comparison.

    I await its release then. I really must say I am skeptical.. been using TextMate + Transmit for eternity, but I love finding out about new apps.

    Transmit works good for me. Have to convince me as to why I need to learn another app.
