First Looks: Twitterrific 2.0
Thanks to Gedeon Maheux, the Principal / Designer from the Iconfactory - I have my hands on the latest beta version of Twitterrific, version 2.0.
The new features on the latest version are plentiful, though instead of listing the 25+ changes to the application, I’m going show off a few new UI changes in the way of screenshots.
One of the more noticeable changes of the UI side is the option to choose how you would like to view the latest tweets from your friends. You can choose a nice compact version, or choose to have everything expanded - a better option if you have few friends in your profile.
The Twitterrific posting window can now be adjusted by simply clicking and dragging the window, it makes it much easier to write messages, especially when you need to go back and make small adjustments.
One last feature I’d like to reveal is the ability to choose which new message “tweet” sound you would like enabled. Along with the default sound featured in the first version of Twitterrific, you have the option of picking from one of five sounds (4 are new).
These are only just a few features of Twitterrific 2.0, I’m itching to reveal more but what is a software release without surprise? Keep an eye on the Iconfactory for more details soon.

I totally use Twitterrific. I think it is the best option out there for updating my Twitter profile. I can’t wait for this to come out to the public “well more to the public.” Looking good!

Nice! This is definitely looking slick. Can’t wait to try it. I use Twitterific usually, but it’s got some quirks that make it annoying to use sometimes (like when it disappears as you’re trying a message). Hopefully this new version helps with that. Certainly looks nicer.

Glenn, great post. the ui overhaul is def. a welcome. i do have some gripes about the current version that hopefully, the developers will take into consideration. I have stopped using twitterrific for 2 weeks now. 1) the inability for twitterrific to keep running but stays displayed in the background just killed it for me, especially when it temporarily hung and thus covering applications i was using at that time. 2) everytime i wake my macbook pro from sleep, twitterrific just “disappeared”. i have to relaunch it every single time 3) if you select a non-latest tweets, newly delivered tweets won’t be displayed. it stayed on the pre-highlighted tweets. 4) how about an option to hide the display less than 10 secs. like 5 for example. since it does not take that long to read 140-char tweets alleviating the many needs to use the toggle key 5) it does not get displayed on either the “force quit application” window or when you do command+tab and thus when it hangs, i need to go to either the terminal or activity monitor to kill it.
I am however hopeful that v2.0 will fix some of these issues for i do love twitterrific very much but due the aforementioned problems, i soley twitter online now. Thanks for sharing this preview.

I think Glenn’s use of Twitter on his frontpage is right up there with one of the only ways Twitter should be used. When I browse through Twitter too often I see it being used as a chat program, which seems to defeat the purpose.

To me, that is what text messages and chat programs are for. Why have public conversations over Twitter? It makes more sense to use Twitter as a global status message. And with the ability to post an update from your phone or chat program of choice, it becomes an up-to-the-minute top blog post!

Paul HillsdonI completely agree with you. Twitter is not a chat program, and I don’t think it should be used as such.
In my case, Twitterrific always loses signal with Twitter for some reason, and then pops up this very annoying window. It does this at least twice an hour. For that reason, I just switched to TwitterPost. We’ll see how it goes.

GROWL SUPPORT, PLEASE! Sorry for yelling, but this (and the cutting off long tweets thing) is my biggest complaint with Twitterific. One cool feature, however, might be an automatic conversion of URLs with TinyURL or URLTea.

I’m the author of Twitterrific. I’d like to address some of the comments here:
@Evan: We’ve changed the auto-hide behavior in this release. It’s impossible to know if you’re reading a tweet or not, so we assume that you are if you make the window frontmost.
@Andre: There’s a lot more than what’s in the screenshots.
@Yohannes: The hangs should be gone. We’ve eliminated several crashing bugs, too. Menubar applications don’t show in Command-Tab or Force Quit — we’ve solved that too.
@Ronald & others: No Growl support in this version. Its on our list of things TODO, though.
@Paul: Read the dialog box that comes up. It tells you can go to the config window and turn it off.
@Brendan: Twitter can be used with restraint — and when it is, it’s a very valuable tool for communicating in a wide group of people. Chat is only for people I work with directly, Twitter is for everyone else.
@Damien: Twitterrific is recreational programming for me. That’s why it’s free. Programming on Windows is hell and I only do it when people pay me.
@Rom: Feature requests like additional update support need to go to Twitter — they provide the API we use.

It does look pretty darn slick, I just hope that it holds up under all that twitting….I bet that pretty soon the ISPs are going to try to sniff out twitting so they can shut it down…yet is uses so little bandwidth. Probably just for fun.

Wow, this is pretty exciting!
Couple nits: The scrollbar seems about 2px too wide — like, it looks huge! ;)
Second, while I love the addition of new sounds, I still am dying to see assignable sounds — so that different friends have different tweets attached to them. Maybe expose this through some of kind of hidden per user preference?
Lastly, I’d love a dropdown menu in the MenuItem — so that I can quit it without going to the prefs!

Love the design of the new Twitterific, but I’m having issues getting mine to refresh with new Tweets. It’s set to every minute, but seems to stall. Set to every 5 minutes though appears to be working. Odd…
