Famous Mac User Setup: Scott McNulty

Scott McNulty lives, plays, and works in Philadelphia, USA. He is a popular and well known blogger for The Unofficial Apple Weblog. His first Mac was an iMac in the summer of 1999 and he hasn’t looked back since. Considered an expert by few, and an annoyance by many Scott takes it all in stride.

He also maintains a personal website; Blankbaby, and is “Philadelphia’s Most Influential Blogger”, a title which is self-proclaimed and entirely unfounded.

What does your current Mac setup consist of?

I use a trusty MacBook by the name of Janus. It’s a 2.00GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB of RAM. Hooked up to the portable is a Dell 24″ 2407 LCD display.

Why have you chosen this machine?

Why did I pick a MacBook? Well, for a number of reason. Since I write about Macs for a living (partially) I really needed an Intel Mac for professional reasons (at least that’s what I told myself). Furthermore, since I just generate text most of the time I didn’t have a need for the more powerful MacBook Pro. I haven’t had a desktop machine in awhile, so the choice was obvious: MacBook (first gen).

What other Apple gear do you own?

Other Apple Gear: I have an 80GB iPod video, G4 Powerbook that I don’t use anymore, and a G4 Cube (I bought it the very day that Steve announced it in 2000).

What is your next planned upgrade to your workstation?

I don’t plan on upgrading any time soon. This MacBook is really well suited to what I need to do at this current point in time.

What do you think of Scott’s setup?

Comments

  1. Great setup! I’m thinking on getting a MacBook Pro when the new ones come out and use it as my home computer.

  2. A PowerBook that isn’t used!! Glenn :-)

I am enjoying the variety of this series, in particular the wide variety of set ups and uses people have.

  3. How big is the external hard drive?

  4. Nice setup! Great pick again Glenn. I really like being able to drive an external monitor from a simple machine such as a MacBook. Beautiful!

  5. He forgot the creatures, wireless keyboard (Apple), logitech mouse, mybook harddrive, and griffin elevator.

    Either way, I like it.

    Amazing setup.

Its great for college students too. I’m going to college this fall and I’m thinking of using a macbook/22inch lcd screen combo. You have the benefits of portability as well as the productivity boost with such a big monitor.

  7. The MacBook looks slightly discoloured. A nice setup nonetheless.

  8. Tidy and minimalistic? Take a look at this set up for the exact opposite:

Glenn - you got Al on your list to interbiew :-)

  9. I’m not too sure if you would call Scott’s setup ‘famous’ — does this mean that anyone with a Macbook and a 24″ Dell LCD monitor also has a famous setup?
Contrary to popular belief, it seems there needs to be more of a non-subtle different between ‘famous’ and ‘really good’.
I, personally, would rather see really expensive leet workstations.

On another note, though, it’s still a nice setup.

“Famous Mac User Setup” is talking about the user, not the setup. Scott McNulty is a well known Apple blogger, hence the “Famous” tag. If you want to see expensive workstations, send me an email and I’ll ZIP up a file of dozens of 10 thousand dolar setups for you :-)

How is the performance while running dual screen on macbook? I doubt that it would be smooth.

  12. Hey Glenn, “Famous Mac User Setup” series keep it going ;)

by the way, I’m interested in that Zip with 10K setups :D

it would be awesome if you could send me those pics at thestaticbot@gmail.com

    thank you.

  13. Another Dell! Love it :)

    - Logitech S510 Desktop k/b and mouse [he has the mouse in that photo]
    - 19″ BenQ Widescreen monitor [upgrading to 24" in the next week or so]

Awesome set up. My wife has a Mac Book that is Intel Core Duo, 1.83 GHz and we want to hook her up to an external widescreen. Did you have much trouble getting this set up to work and do you think we could do the same.
