Disco, the media burning app with a twist is now available as a public beta.

Picture 1-6

If you want to purchase it, you might consider doing the today-only offer on macZOT where you’re also entered into a drawing to potentially win one of three LaCie burners.

I have one copy of Disco to give away to a lucky reader, to get into the draw, simply comment on this article with your views on Disco, how you plan to use it, or how you would improve it. Winner will be selected at random on November 1st, so get commenting!

Well, I think Disco is the best thing happened to Mac software in a long time, so it’s to safe to say I will continue using it and eventually buy it. Because of Disco I’ve burned more discs today than the last week or so.

If I were to tell the developers what to focus on, I would suggest they improve the smoke a bit.

  2. I love the ease of use with Disco. Thanks to the CD spanning feature, I can now make (another) backup of my music library to DVDs, which should leave me with peace of mind. ;) I’ll also be using it to burn DVDs of some movies I have made. The copy feature when you insert a disc is freakin’ awesome as well.

  3. Sorry, that last post was by me, not sure why I put Disco (Disco on the brain apparently). And by disc-spanning I meant ‘Spandex’ which is even better seeing as I’m a downhill ski racer. Lol

  4. This seems a nice application and a nice little novel idea with the smoke animation, what’s cooler is that you can blow it away/flick it away!

  5. I downloaded the public beta of Disco today. I really like it.

I find it extremely easy to use and am pleased at the way it handles multi-session discs, a feature I sorely miss when using the Finder to burn discs. I only recently learned that one could use Disk Utility to do this. And even though it can burn multi-session discs, it’s a pain figuring out how to each time.

I was very surprised by how quickly Disco launched on my MacBook Pro. I’m used to quick launch times, but this was up and running in one bounce of its icon!

I have two suggestions that could make it even better.
First off, I don’t like the fact that the OS X ‘gumdrop’ buttons have been replaced by black, Windows-like symbols (’x’ and ‘-’). It reminds me of an era I’d much rather leave forgotten.
Secondly, I think the Preferences could be simplified a little. I don’t completely understand what all of the check-boxes do.

Overall, I think it’s a great application that, just like AppZapper, adds some important functionality to an operating system that seems to be ‘complete’, but actually isn’t. Both Disco and AppZapper are products that can appeal to just about every Mac user.

I do hope I get that free license!

That’s one great way to entice people to comment on your blog Mr.Glenn ~ worked for me anywho, I am Greg by the way. Hello!

Disco : A neat little app squeezing the sweetness that is mac into one compact little window. The crossroads workflow is great for people who have no idea what they’re doing, whilst it just makes it even easier for those who do! Sure, it can’t do everything Toast can, but for a slice of the price you’ll be getting a nicer interface that’ll let you play with fire.

If I won this free license a) I’d be happy, b) I could archive in the slickest of fashions.

I’m amazed at how the Disco creators would make burning a CD ‘exciting’, but they’ve actually done it. I’ve enjoyed using Appzapper and I was looking forward to using the beta today. However I have a Macbook and I’ve heard people complaining about the lack of smoke for poorer graphics cards. This app is so much more than blowing smoke and it’s so polished. The dock icon, the way the preferences swap from ‘General’ to ‘Register’, the transparent window. A way to improve the app?? Make the discography search window available when you open the app straight away..maybe integrate it into the ‘Insert Disc’ window??

I’ve tried out the beta and it’s absolutely amazing. Does anyone else notice that the Dock icon looks kind of small, compared to other circle icons like Safari, Firefox, and iTunes? I guess they couldn’t really do the black flames as cool if the disco ball was bigger. It’d be amazing if they made it so the disco ball spun and shone with colored lights when you were burning.

  10. Well, about Disco. Some things are just fantastic. The program has an ease of use that is simply amazing. At the same time, that is exactly the area it fails to deliver. While I can burn a piece of data easily, I can’t for the world understand how I would go about to burn a DVD-R. Neither did I at a first galnce understand how to burn a music CD easily, and ended up reverting to iTunes to do that. Maybe I wasn’t focused enough, or maybe it can’t be done easily, I don’t know. Anyway, Disco has potential and I how that when it’s out of beta these features will be as obvious as standard data burning.

  11. A great app! Posted my thoughts at my website.

Since I have mine already, don’t count this comment for the draw.

I’ve also seen your blog through Digg in the past couple of weeks, and I just added you to my list of RSS feeds. I’m always on the lookout for a new mac-centric blog and I think I’ve found a great one! So thanks for that!

Disco seems to be absolutely terrific…the smoke is a fantastic feature. A previous commenter noted that it’s tremendous how the creators of Disco actually got people excited about a disc-burning app. I concur. It seems as if there’s a new “posse” of Mac developers and you seem to have them all as your sponsors. Cha-Ching, Disco, Awaken, and Appzapper are all extremely polished. The MyDreamApp competition really energized the community. Thanks for the great blog and the chance to win a copy of Disco!

Disco looks like an amazing app, the interface is one of the best I’ve seen recently and smoke, oy, what can I say? Brilliant! I think I’d ditch my copy of Toast for this and just use it for everything. Looks to be much more lightweight than Toast too.

Wee. Oh, and I love your blog Glenn, I found it through Flickr, actually. Pre-digg. Psht, n00bs.

Hey Glenn, nice idea with the contest, it certainly got people to post!
I won AppZapper from one of these comment contests a while back, so I don’t expect to win again, although it’d be great if I did!
I’m holding off buying Disco until I get a MacBook Pro (My iBook doesn’t support the smoke)
I think Disco is a great app, and I believe it will be something of a trendsetter. This trend, ushered in by apps like Cha-Ching, AppZapper, Disco, etc. is the focus on small, simple, beautiful apps that have a narrow focus. This way they can be built with the user experience and workflow in mind. I think that the “race” between Apple and Shareware developers is narrowing, with the little guy’s beginning to lead the charge. This small shareware segment is turning out better products than much larger companies.
    Love your blog!

I personally don’t understand what disco is for. But this is a really nice website, except for the design.

  16. Well, I don’t necessarily need a burning app, it’s beatiful, and I want to support the Mac developers. I won’t buy right away, but I will try it out.

Plus, I’ve had some time when I could really use a burning app, but didn’t have one.

Disco… in a word, is so much more fun to use than just Finder. More features, more engaging, more overall… it brings the joy that we see in OS X back to a single application. Amazing UI, icon, and program… I love it!

  18. This is pissing me off, I have an “underage graphics card” on my macbook, so no smoke. That’s lame. My graphics card can handle a lot more than some little smoke. This is lame. The only reason I’m saying that is because I want smoke :(

I just noticed that in your post you wanted us to “comment on this article with your views on Disco, how you plan to use it, or how you would improve it.”

I already did the first part, but I would say I plan to use it whenever I have to burn a file to give to someone else, or save as a backup. I don’t believe it supports VCD’s, but that something I’d love to be able to do without Toast.

Another small gripe I have is with the interface, I don’t mind the black x - + circles, but I don’t like the excess transparency. (It’s similar to Voice Candy) Things should be transparent when they are meant to be out of the way, but Disco would usually be the focus of attention; at least the preferences would be, so the transparency just gets in the way. Also, the preferences are a bit TOO compact, it’d be nice to have them a bit bigger and easier to read.

Well I think that Disco is WAY better than using Disk Utility to burn images, or using Finder. I would buy a copy, but I am 13, and my parents are NOT going to lend me their visa :) I’m hoping for a free copy!

  21. Most people use Toast to burn CD/DVD but Disco is just brilliant!

I really like the “smoke” effect and it keeps you on your mac even when the disc is burning. I wouldn’t do that if I used another app to burn stuff.

I’ve d/l the public beta and it’s so lightweight and fast. I wished we could do more than 3 burns.. They should impose the time limit instead..

Having said that, it’s an app worth buying..

  22. I wouldn’t use it. I want it so I can point and laugh.

No, but seriously, I want it.

Hey Glenn, just wondering about the status of this page: http://www.glennwolsey.com/?p=46
“Bonus: The 3 closest guesses to what Disco is in the comments on this article will receive a free copy of Disco upon release, so get speculating.”

  24. I’m just upset that MacBooks can’t use smoke.
    *hits dev team*

  25. I’d use Disco to make love tapes for all my adoring female friends.

I’d make a mix cd everyday and deliver to all the fine girls out there.

    Disco. The chic magnet.
