Canon 40D DSLR Specs Revealed
Last night Amazon let slip of specifications, details, and pricing on Canon’s upcoming successor to the 30D, the Canon 40D DSLR.
The Canon 40D is more of a revolution than an evolution to the previous model in the line. It packs in some pretty impressive features professional amateurs and professionals alike will thoroughly appreciate and make use of in the field or studio.
- 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor
- Large 3.0-inch LCD display with enhanced Live View
- 6.5 frame-per-second continuous shooting capability
- sRAW mode; 35-zone metering system
- Integrated Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit
Priced at $1299, it’s expected to ship on September 20th.
I’m very keen to test out this camera and hoping to have one in my hands sometime next year. I’ve also recorded a video showcasing my thoughts on todays episode of The Glenn Wolsey Show.
What about you? Does the new 40D excite you?

I’ve been thinking about replacing my 20D (it’s getting near 100,000 actuations.) This looks to fit the bill very nicely. While the 10.1 megapixel will hardly be noticable from my current 8, the better metering system, and self cleaning will be very handy to have.

This is a new market for me. I’ve recently purchased a D40 (no, not a 40D) from Nikon. Features like Live View and the 6 and a half frames per second burst mode are a big step up.
One thing about the Live View. I believe Olympus had this on their SLRs and one thing caught my eye. Live view is helpful and all with viewing the image on a 3″ screen, however, features like focusing and actually taking a picture take a little longer because the mirror is flipped up or something. I guess it’s a compromise.
Looks like an awesome camera, the 40D. Can’t wait to try one out!

Not just yet, as I have a few purchasing priorities before a new camera body. In name, a car and a 70-200mm L lens.

While the camera does look really good, as someone who recently purchased a Canon 400D, I’m not spending more $$$ on another camera.
I’m thinking of possibly getting a new lens or even Aperture.

Hi Glenn,
I think this looks like it will be winner for Canon - great specs, espcially if it has the Digic III chip and a 3″ screen.
A big thing for people to remember is that a body will lose money fast, whereas good glass, especially Canon L glass holds it value very, very well.
Cheers,
Jon

I’d recommend you pick up a battery grip, makes the camera feel like a whole new body, awesome experience. After that, start investing in glass. (I’m yet to do both, but will soon).

Tim NeilenThe Amazon links are now dead, any chance you kept them in your history / cache?

Sadly I didn’t, but Engadget kept the gallery.

The most interesting thing about the 40D in my eyes is that it’s been ramped up to a 14-bit range. This makes a big difference, bigger imo than more pixels.

TomThose specs do sound sweet!! I escpecially like that they are using a nice big 3 inch LCD. Which will make it much easier to check your pictures.
I am using a Canon Rebel XT now whch I think is called the Canon 350D in your neck of the woods.

Rich ClarkJust got a 40D from H/K and only took 3 days, sweet. I got to a point where I felt I was missing shots with my 350d so decided it was time for an upgrade. Love the feel of the 40D, 6.5fps is awesome and the large screen looks pretty good. Just waiting for the 24-70 f2.8 to arrive now to really try it out!!
