Apple’s Developing Relationship With YouTube

apple-tv-youtube.jpg

As Apple has become more involved with mobile media, they’ve developed a strong connection with Google integrating YouTube into their line of products. The integration of YouTube they’ve mapped in on the iPhone, iPod touch and the Apple TV is impressive - their connection with Google has increased in strength and reach as the year has passed, I’m very excited to see where it’s going to head in the future.

In a thoroughly thought out decision, I recently settled on YouTube as the main resource to spread my video show because of the increasing widespread compatibility over different platforms and devices. Apple partnering up with YouTube really makes it hard for competitors to get into the market, with YouTube regaining exclusive iPhone and Apple TV deals providing widespread exposure for YouTube publishers.

Putting it in perspective, if you were to publish a video to the web, would you prefer to upload it to YouTube where you have millions of potential viewers from all over the world, via computers, the Apple TV, the iPod touch, and the iPhone within minutes uploading it, or alternatively, would you prefer to upload it to a smaller video site to retain a somewhat ‘better’ community feeling?

I chose the larger community with the more widespread viewer base. Sites like Vimeo initially attracted me due to their tightly knit community feeling, though the pulling power of Apple + Google’s YouTube made my decision for me. YouTube appears as if it will provide a much more stable base for my videos in the future.

  1. Hmm interesting! Nice article.

  2. Will there still be an iTunes feed? I really like that feature and it allows me to easily put missed or new episodes on my iPod.

  3. Plus there’s an Export to YouTube option already available in iMovie ‘08, which makes it easy to share short videos with the web.

  4. I’m glad Apple is making a relationship with YouTube, but I really don’t like YouTube’s many spam comments, and their many changes. It seems like everytime I visit YouTube.com, it looks a bit different. I’m glad I can now view YouTube in a nicer interface on an Apple TV, iPod touch, iPhone, and future apple devices. Sadly, I don’t have any of those devices as of yet, but I really hate visiting youtube.com, thats why I only visit on my Mac when I’m linked to it, whether its from a friend, or from a YouTube Subscription email ;-)

Personally I’d encourage viewers to use another service other than YouTube (for the community) , but also offer it on YouTube for the compatibility of Apple devices.

  5. I don’t know, YouTube just seems way too cluttered, and the UI isn’t really that attractive compared to Vimeo. On top of that, YouTube has almost the same amount of spam that you would get from MySpace, mostly from private messages and video comments.

And - this is going to sound crazy - I initially stayed away from YouTube because I couldn’t get a username that I liked.

YouTube just doesn’t feel very Mac-like, and it reminds me too much of sites like MySpace. Maybe if they redesigned everything, and improved stuff like spam control, I might think about using YouTube for all of my videos.

  6. the ‘my video show’ link points to http://youtube.com/glennwosley, not http://youtube.com/glennwolsey as it should.

I must agree. I couldn’t get my name, my online name, or anything. I had to get a username that is 15 letters long! That’s just insane.

As for the Mac-like aspect. Yeah, YouTube is too cluttered and Windows-ish. It’s really bad….

  8. Will there still be an iTunes feed? I really like that feature and it allows me to easily put missed or new episodes on my iPod.

Of course! It’s still there and working :-)

Goes to show even I myself spell my name incorrectly at times ;-)

  9. I agree with you, Apple and YouTube look to be bringing mobile video clips to everyone in the near future.
Just saw your twitter about the flickr milestone.. Congrats!
Curious… how long have you been uploading pics?

  10. Glenn, maybe take a moment to think a bit. Apple isn’t developing any sort of relation with YouTube, they’re continuing their already great relationship with Google (remember how Google purchased YouTube, Glenn?) So, in the end, Apple really isn’t expanding their number of relations, they’re just doing more and more with Google.

Personally, I’m not a fan of YouTube. It’s full of spam, crap, and idiots. Vimeo ftw.

Thanks for pointing that out Alec, I made a little adjustment to the article. Keep in mind that Apple haven’t really done much with any other Google product or service other than YouTube to date, which is why I’m emphasizing YouTube above.

  12. I don’t do videos but I think Vimeo is cooler. The UI is more clean.

  13. I like Vimeo better than Youtube as well. Youtube is way too cluttered and full of spam, Vimeo has a clean interface providing a nice experience.

But Youtube is BIIIIIIG. Vimeo is not.

  14. YouTube is no longer just a website. It’s a media service that can be found almost everywhere. When Apple put YouTube on the iPhone/iPod Touch, I became addicted once again.

I also like that youtube can be used for video podcasts also.

  15. as far as I’m aware, front row in leopard will feature the same interface as the apple tv…

does this mean that youtube will feature as part of front row too?

  16. But Apple have also integrated YouTube within their software. You can upload straight to YouTube from within iMovie. Apple seems to be making a similar relationship with Yahoo! so I wouldn’t be surprised if without a plug-in you would be able to upload to Flickr in iPhoto

  17. I like Vimeo because they now support HD files and the quality is a lot better than YouTube. They are now allowing 500mb of uploads per week. I’ve already uploaded 4 of my HD clips there. The UI is a lot cleaner and matches the Apple community aesthetic.

Speaking of Flickr in iPhoto, anyone know of an app that will import my photos from Flickr, using the Flickr API? For example, “taken on” could become Events, Sets could be albums, etc. Anyone know of anything? Photocasting only gets the first page of photos from Flickr, not all of them :/

More widespread community all the way, imho.

  21. Plus, YouTube has made its way into the mainstream. I think even my grandma know what YouTube is…

  22. Keep in mind that Apple haven’t really done much with any other Google product or service other than YouTube to date, which is why I’m emphasizing YouTube above.

Google Maps is a on the iPhone. I also have it on my hacked iPod touch. Other than that, I guess you’re right. :)

  23. Apple and google are doing well together, I mean apple tv with youtube on it is awesome.

Almost make me want apple tv!

Although it’s a step in the right direction… I won’t be getting an Apple TV until 1080p outputs…
